On November 17th, our Salt & Light Youth Ministry Program kicked off our fall season in a very special way!
We welcomed 12 teens (3 new members) and we were all treated to an enlightened and informative evening. Der Hayr led this session as he devoted this time to talk with the teens about the priestly vestments worn during the Soorp Badarak. This included Biblical references, the significance of each vestment worn, the order in which order they are placed on the celebrant, and how prayers are offered during the vesting process. The teens took turns reading from Ephesians 6:10-18 about the six pieces of the armor of God which the vestments are modeled after: the belt of truth, the breast plate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. During their discussion, Der Hayr placed the vestments one of the teens. The teens were engaged and enthusiastic about the significance of the vestments and asked thoughtful questions.
Der Hayr then provided a hands-on lesson about the making of Nshkar (Communion bread). He had the teens read passages from both the Old and New Testaments that provided background on how and why we prepare the Nshkar the way that we do. Der Hayr then demonstrated the actual process of forming the Nshkar and each teen was able to make one for themselves to bring home. During this time the teens read from Exodus 16 describing the manna as “ bread from heaven” and from the Gospel of John in which we read Jesus’ words that He is the true bread of life. The teens discussed the importance of relying on God to meet our daily need,s. both physical and spiritual.
At the conclusion of the session, Der Hayr blessed each Nshkar at the altar in the youth assembly room as we all prayed together. The teens then enjoyed a pizza dinner and fellowship.
The facilitators as well as the teens wish to thank Der Hayr the Board of Trustees and our church family for their commitment and support.
Our next session is Monday, December 8th held between 6-8pm. All teens ages 13-18 are welcome.
